[D] emotivation

I know it's something that will never go away, but this to me and several of my friends that are keen to get back into the game are totally put off by the 'big D'

I know it’s always been a part of the game, but there wouldn't be any chance that we could stretch the level you could get before adding in your description.

level 15 you can basically (if you know what you’re doing) achieve in perhaps 30mns? mmm, I’ve seen a post about something similar to this... just thought with new management it might be looked at differently.

I was thinking about having it lowered to 10.

But, in all seriousness, let's be honest.

Rolling Time = Character Description.

Level 1 = Character Description.

Now, not saying you do this, but some people will just rank and rank and rank and procrastinate on that description.

I can't make 15 in half an hour. Probably because I usually don't have a group or don't play a straight melee.

It's like I wish you could master skills/spells pre-15. Thing is, it would get abused. I tend to think of procrastination as self-inflicted abuse.

D-check is awesome.

So, with all that rambling, here's my proposed idea:

Raise the advancement w/o a description check to 25. Anyone who is caught BEYOND 15 without a description takes some form of a penalty, IMM chosen. 5 slays, lowering of a stat (by like 3 or something that has to be re-trained), etc....

I feel the more ranks we let players get without doing a description the more ranks they'll wait to do a description.... Personally, I see a description as free experience which usually give me a rank at low levels.

My main worry is the 'trash' element ie if we push it back to 30 it would be possible to rank up, kill off anyone you see, delete and do it again in a very short timeframe. Said differently - the more you 'invest' in a character eg training, time, descriptoin etc the more likely ou are to treat it as something precious and NOT do stupid things like this.

That being said - it might bear some consideration... Thanks for the suggestion.

PS - if your friends write their desc, roll, log in, put it on, dcheck it all a day before play they can then go drinking and it will be a non-issue by the time they are ready. Usually IMMs go through dchecks everytime we are about wink

yeah, without dcheck I HATED the descriptiona pproval, I'd spend days waiting for approval usually. Now that they have dcheck, I do just that, roll the character, get a few levels quickly while making the desc. Then I log off and by the time I get back on (a few hours later usually) it's almost ALWAYS approved.

I honestly don't see the necessity. We have a very active IMMstaff - I've rarely ever seen a dcheck linger. If you aren't using it, that is another issue...

Yeah, you and your friends should start playing and see if the increase in imm presence makes the problem less of an issue. I see an immortal on every day, so like Lytholm said, do it all one day, come back the next and I bet it wouldn't be a problem But in any case, come back and play. I think it's looking like MUD activity is picking up, and with more players, the current staff are likely to feel more motivation to put more into the MUD so we can enjoy it Which in turns means more fun for you once you DO get past lvl 15.

...and provide a good, well thought-out description.

Recently, a friend of mine and myself have brought two of our real life friends to FL. They are new to FL and they are new to MUD games in general i.e. they have NEVER played a MUD game before. The whole concept of description and RP is unfamiliar to them, this combined with the fact that their english skills are not the best possible. Even though I dug an old desc and gave it to one of them, still explaining how to use the desc editor through skype took me more than 30 minutes. The other one wasn't that lucky and had to write one by himself. He still sits at level 15 trying to write it. More than a week now

By far the easiest way (and the way I still use despite desc editor) is the tried and true:

  1. Open notepad.

  2. Type 1234567890 five times.

  3. Leave a blank line.

  4. start every line with desc + (copy it all the way down the page).

  5. Type in the description.

  6. Paste it into the MUD 10 lines at a time (you're got GMUD or JMC didn't you?).

  7. Type desc format

Submit a dcheck

Once you get used to how long it has to be you can type it all in one go and break it up from there - but until then this is a far easier way.

The other rule I have for descriptions I write is (I think help descriptoin specifies this but the old yard stick used to be) 12 - 15 lines minimum. Its a rule I stick to (sometime I go more). If you write five lines expect NOT to be let through. Just because you write three paragraphs doesn't mean its good either: waffle != a good description. Personally I hate people describing their armor as it changes but I suppose that is personal preference.

I hope this helps.

If your friend has problems with his very first description, tell him to ask one of the Staff to help him. I've done that several times with new players. We have a couple lower ranked Imms running around and one of their duties is to help you along with things like that, so let them do their jobs

I don't think we will change the level 15 limit for descs anytime soon. There is no need to do so with the dcheck command.

My several friends that began playing had the same problems with the desc too but Immortal staff helped them. One of them even got a fire dragon with his first char

Let me also remind you all that descriptions should never be less than 8 lines long, and we prefer 10.

I have had to reject so many dchecks due to people not wanting to spend the time to wordcheck their descriptions. Which just shows how much effort and thought you had in writing it.

I always find these threads odd...I rarely have to wait, maybe its my play time.

also Dcheck is very nice.

Logically, since you are talking about the same people as I am

Hah!

Curious, I used to always end up being put back into newbie chat to help the young ones with stuff like desc and new questions. Is it the active staff that's made that less of a need. Or do I just not stand out to the weak and weary anymore.
