Ideas for giving death some meaning.

Rather than derail threads, I've decided to create a new one so that we can put all our ideas in one place.

Many seem to agree that people are more worried about losing EQ than they are lives. From what I gather(and my personal opinion as well), the reason for this is that Eq effects your powerlevel while dying doesnt.

A simple solution would add on some negative effects to death. Here are a few things that came to my mind.(DISCLAIMER: I'm just brainstorming):

  1. Skill loss upon death. When you die, 1-3 random skills go down 1-3%points. Now, I know this is tough, but moderate characters would be immune to this.

  2. Randomized lives removed at death. At death and at level 50, a character loses a random amount of lives instead of just one. I'll throw out a number, 1-5 lives removed per death. Moderate characters would be exempt.

  3. Additionally, if we are able to fix the exp penalies to accurately represent power levels of races/classes, then we could make more powerful combos suffer increased penalties as a way of compensation. This would bring meaning to exp penalties again. As an example and using the ideas above, a very high exp penalty race/combo would suffer a 3% decrease to 3 skills while losing 5 lives when he dies. If you're gonna play powercombos, then you better work for them!

As ideas always need tweaking I could see this needing some but for the most part, it's not a bad idea at all.

I like.

Great idea on Power Combos lossing % on death.

What about a random EQ decay on death. For example, you died, and one of your pieces would just crack and be destroyed.

That would eat up people who tend to suicide just to get their precious leet armor back.

I do not like losing skill % on death. Especially on low int races for skills that are already a bitch to master. EQ decay on death on the other hand, especially for rare/limited items, is a great idea. ^^

Not all power combos are high exp combos.

I like the idea of potential EQ decay, but not losing skills or the like. I am against training as it is, and if I started losing some of the trickier proficiencies on death (ie. randomly losing monk weapon proficiency as an example for my current class) then I'd not bother playing.

I agree. If I spend 50 hours mastering all the skills on a slith blm, take a gang death, and lose 5 lives, and 3% off three skills. I would be INCREDIBLY pissed, and probably only play human clerics, and invokers.

So what you guys are saying is that you would HATE dying, and avoid it at all costs?

Well damn! I think we just found out a way to make death mean something!

Like I said on the other thread...

If you make death hurt too much, then risking your life stops being fun and starts being something you want to avoid. This is a PK game too, remember? We should want people to be willing to fight. We should want people to be willing to die. We should be encouraging people to stick around to fight 2-1 or 3-1 odds, not making it even more punishing for them to show some balls and determination.

The way to make people care less about EQ is to make EQ matter less, to make EQ less important than it is now... it is not to make death an even more painful experience than it already is.

Like Dey said, let's just give the possibility of EQ decay if you have it for too long. That should take care of the 'never die power combos cuz they have too many lives' problem.

As it is, I'm completely against gimping this game anymore and making it that much harder or less fun to have a character, considering how LONG it takes to get to 50 sometimes.

Geeezzz.

Why does everyone want to make death harder than it is? With 1-3 rage deletions of characters a week, I don't see how anyone can consider death taken well enough to require anything to be changed.

I agree with Klemkin. The system works fine.

"a gang death, and lose 5 lives"

This is exactly what we are trying to avoid. You die once, them you get your mind working and start avoiding PK while you are weak. Not balls to the wall in mithril.

"Like Dey said, let's just give the possibility of EQ decay if you have it for too long."

This is exactly what we should avoid. Penalties for living.

No one is immortal. Everyone fights, everyone dies. If anything should be done is the elimination of auto-healing EQ.

If death doesn't mean something to you already (i.e. you're playing grab-*** with someone that just killed you), that's your problem.

Why do you think I rage delete so much? DEATH DOES MEAN SOMETHING TO SOME OF US!

If it doesn't mean something to you or someone else, that's your RP problem. Stop trying to hard-code this delusion for everyone else.

lol, we could just make alot more eq rot death Uber items, etc etc.

Stop the presses!...me and Valek have the same emotionally inflamed sentiment.

Just leave it alone, sheesh, why does everyone want to change something weird like how many lives you get. I say make it unlimited and no loots, like wow!

** I say make it unlimited and no loots' date=' like wow![/b']**

** brandishes his holy symbol Them's fightin' words. **

Exactly.

Next time you're about to kill me offer me the chance to hand over 2 - 4 pieces of eq to secure my life. Guess what I'll do? In fact, if anyone says 'f*** off' then they really need to read help death taking note of DEATH IS TO BE AVOIDED!!!

Thanks to Toten for making sense - there is ALREADY an eq flag that rots on death. If the IMMs wanted more of this they would simply make more of this...

Thumbs down to skill loss - if I wanted skill loss I'd just hit myself... Or not train it in the first place...

Death already sucks. If you're not valuing death more than your eq then YOU need to take a good, hard, long look at yourself. We don't need to code to enforce this.

Can't half tell that most ppl here come from somewhere that the government things it should legislate to protect people from themselves can you.... mutter (and for all of you who take offense I have this issues in my country too and it SUCKS).
