I think it would be neat if characters could buy a bit of land.
Would be cool to tell someone IG that you are retiring to your manor for instance. It would also give players an alternative to the locker system. You could actually buy a chest that comes with a key and lock your non rares in there. Would be added fun for thieves to stumble accross peoples homes and rob them. Of course with enough gold you should be able to hire a guard that will watch over your home when you are away.
This idea could even open up a new clan of realtors who contract builders for your place. Could be from a small den in the woods, to a multi roomed house on a hill. What do you people think?

This is a good idea and one that has been available before.
There are a few houses in the lands:
Demon House - Miscreant and I bought this mansion for 1 million gold coins.
Vampire House - There is a house in the west woods built for Yekosavik the vampire.
Ninja House - Calandra Decobru has a house in Miruvhor.
Warrior House - I'm not sure if this is still around, but Ulraunt the warrior paid some major cash to build a house for himself.
There are some mansions in the city as well, however no locker system in the houses. The only issue with the house thing is you must have an active builder to put them in. On top of which the longevity of the houses are way beyond that of the characters. All in all however this was and is a good idea.
Unless people just used the empty houses in cities/villages instead of building new ones.
I think it's a good idea. In the long run, it would open doors for Syndicate RP plots (taking loans from Syndicate and having to pay them back) and open doors for the RP of some characters.
'Yeah. Maybe implement some system of renting the empty houses in the cities. Then when the character got deleted/condead the house would be back in the market unless the character willed the house to someone. Might be interesting. Would give new incentives to fight off the city raids.
I believe you can still do this. Just take a couples notes to Immortal on your part... And a chunk of gold.

Then raids would have to be so much stronger. A half decent equipped pinn with some brains can take down a raid alone, no problem.
If we had huge groups of 50's protecting the cities raids would become 100% useless.

Well yeah, but you usually don't see pinns lounging around cities anyway. With thieves and ninjas, your house wouldn't really be all THAT safe either. Sure would make some cool new scenes though.

Ahhh....but can they do it while another player attacks them? 
People who interfered in my raids were automatically added to my 'List'

But 5 vs 1 still makes raids very ineffective 
EDIT: Especially as Inyovin mentioned - atm people tend to 'pop' up like mushrooms, as soon as one appears you know there are going to be hundreds
