Redesigning the mud school

There’s been some talk of this lately around the forums, and I think it’s definitely something that anyone and everyone to contribute to. 

 

As of now, the mud school is extremely dated, and probably not very helpful. I think that as a player base, and mudders in general, we can help remake this area into an actual good introduction into FL. 

 

My thoughts on things that should be introduced via mud school:

common commands and abbreviations:

-help, kill, murder, practice, train, scan, sleep, quit, rest, wake, consider, skill, spell, song, affect, alias, who, who group, who pk, where, say, tell, group tell, wear, wield, equipment, score, prompt, follow, nofollow, group, eat, drink, 

 

General stuff used by the mud:

lag-both used by you(entering commands or trip/bash/etc) and on you, spellcasting syntax(cast/commune/sing), not being able to quit because of recent combat, pets and their commands, all the effects of the stuff on the score sheet, the pk flag and xp penalties, proficiency and skill training, newbie chat and a forum link, containers  

 

Now I know this isn’t a full list, but I thought maybe I could get the ball rolling on this. 

 

Things i remembered later that I don’t want lost in my edits: description, open, close, lock, unlock, notes , news, changes, journal, history, targeting via 2. 3. Etc, buy, sell, browse, reply, replay, flee, RP points, shop commands

In terms of actual room building, I think having a personal teacher you follow through would be good. 

For example. 

 

You create a character, and you land in a room where an npc tells you if you’re new to FL or muds, go south, if you want to skip tutorial go north. North sends you to where you can train, practice and kill stuff to level. 

South sends you to a teacher/mentor who starts out by explaining that FL is an RP/pk mud, then says something like:

“I see you’ve chosen the Invoker class. Invokers are skilled at killing their enemies with magic, especially with their signature ‘mana charge’ skill. Check ‘help mana charge’ for more information. Help files can be very useful for finding out more information about many things in FL, as can the forums at theforsakendlands.com.”

Once a bit of time passes, your teacher would bring up your spells/skills lists, and gives you a free practice/mastery of a single skill/spell to get you started. They would explain normally you have to practice and use your abilities to master them, and how they’re more effective the higher their proficiency. To get this practice/mastery, you’d have to tell them which one, then confirm with a reply. 

 

From there, you’d ‘follow’ them through a series of rooms that would explain other parts of the game, and give maybe some equipment, exp, and gold. Nothing outrageous, but something to get them to use the various commands.

 

There could even be a place where they come to that reads “What would you like to know more about?” And on choosing a subject, they’re taken to a room that explains it.

The mud school is the next bullet point on my list. The reason things are moving slowly in general is because I'm working with a player on something that is very prog intensive and involved, in addition to running the current plot and one on the side. I mention that just for transparency.

In regards to the mud school: The current idea is that you will have the option to either build your character the traditional way, or build it in game through the mud school. You will be taught the basics of communication, equipping, opening/closing, following, fighting and so forth. It will not be all-encompassing simply because there is a huge breadth of things in our game. However, it will give players new to MUDS the basics on how to get around. For experienced MUD players visiting us for the first time, it will be an introduction to how we are different, while also introducing the world's factions, religions and possibly more.

Please note that all of this is subject to change when I actually get to the project.

@Volgathras Ideas I posted for possible EQ so that if a Merchant is not being played at that given point in time that at least new players can get something comparable without getting too shafted if they face someone who got lucky enough to actually catch a Merchant online. Possible Quests to cut down on time and slightly elaborate at the bottom so it can cover the basic of basics via riddles of sorts possibly.

You can seek out a MERCHANT for a better outfit than the one you currently wear. Yours seems a bit overused. If none are about, perhaps you could help me further with some tasks? I'll even throw in a set of wares to make it more interesting for you.

 

  1. Well, this was definitely not the outcome we were hoping for. We figured you'd take care of them for us by eliminating them and not by amplifying the situation by joining them. Regardless though, perhaps I could still give you some advice. The MERCHANTS of Aabahran are very helpful and often offer younger Adventurers some thick armors. If none are about though, I could offer you a set of wares too, if you're interested in doing a few more tasks for me?

  1. I see you decided to let him do what he was doing regardless of my wishes. That is fine though, but be  wary. Such deviant acts are not to be taken lightly and you should definitely seek out the scrolls on 'HELP RULES' for further guidance.

 

  1. Congratulations once again, ! You have successfully completed your task in a  nearly record time. I would highly suggest that you seek out the scrolls of 'HELP RULES' to see further what is appropriate within Aabahran and do adhere to such things. After all, we're here to enjoy our times spent about.

Take care of the wolf trying to blow those pigs houses down.

It seems you have once again come at a great time. We noticed that there is a wolf picking on some small pigs inside. We can't have that, there's plenty of food elsewhere for them, and these are treasured pigs of the Knights of the Castle. We can't have their pigs being slaughtered for no good reason.

 

  1. Thank you, . The Knights will be more than happy knowing that their pigs are still safe. Perhaps it is time to try your hand out on something else though?

 

  1. Seriously, ? The Knights may not be fitting for you then. Perhaps you'll fit in better with the Nexus in the end. You certainly seem to be more their type based on your actions.

Take care of the goblin drawing inappropriate things on the Heralds Scrolls.

 

It is good you have returned, there is yet another issue at hand. Perhaps you can take care of it in your own way and see to it that the scrolls of Herald aren't forever tainted by this goblins graffiti. As is we've found random anatomies being placed inside varying TOMES. The Library cannot have this.

Congratulations, . It seems you are catching onto things. There are many consumables in Aabahran that can do different things. Sometimes they're simple and just food so that you can keep yourself full and happy. You'll also want to drink something else to quench your thirst. The most popular seems to be milk around here, but water works too. Perhaps you should seek out a few stores in Maelbrim for basic things, but you'll find milk in Ofcol and Ralardia if you prefer that as well.

Congratulations, . An abbreviation is correct and in the world of Aabahran you'll notice that often times not everyone can be as fast as another. To make things easy you can use abbreviations to help try and get an edge over your opponents. You can also use an Alias to set up and make it far more simple for you. Seek out the scrolls of 'HELP ALIAS' to seek further guidance.

Congratulations, . Death is a very real situation in Aabahran. In fact it is common everywhere. Congratulations, . That is indeed true, and although Aabahran has no such thing, we do have mounts of varying styles and varying price ranges. They help you out a great deal and in the three major cities, Val Miran, Miruvhor, and Maelbrim, you'll get your first mount free by finding them in each of them. This will make it so you can move much further before needing to sleep to regain your strength to begin moving again. Just remember to dismount before you sleep though, otherwise you end up with a nasty headache. To learn more just seek out the scrolls of 'HELP MOUNT'.

Congratulations, . Maps are a very important tool for younger Adventurers like yourself. You'll find many can help you find things within cities so you aren't just stumbling around at all hours of the day trying to find yourself something to eat or drink. You may also find that many shops close at varying times of the day. You should seek out the scroll of 'HELP TIME' as it will help you get at least a vague idea of how it works in Aabahran.

Congratulations, . Although it isn't exactly something you see happen in Aabahran every day, you'll notice that some people can do things that others wont or cannot. This can be something as small as being able to speak differently than the rest of people. In these instances you may wish to seek out the scroll of 'HELP EMOTE' in order to get a better idea of what you can pull off. Just remember though, don't abuse such a thing and to consult the scroll of 'HELP RULES' in order to make sure it's appropriate.

Congratulations . We all have varying levels of knowledge within Aabahran. This is extremely helpful sometimes and other times you may find that the person you're asking also doesn't know. You should try to see who is about though by entering 'WHO' to see if anyone else can possibly answer your question. Seeking out the scrolls of 'HELP WHO' also further expands on this. What you should refrain from doing though is going OOC when asking. This world does not know of the depths of who you truly are, and thus we prefer a strict level of remaining IC while speaking to other people. Many are still willing to answer such questions though as long as it pertains to the Forsaken Lands itself. 'HELP NEWBIE' would also help you get acquainted with Aabahran.

One last thing before you go though, . You'll want to learn as much as you can about where you can go to begin your path in your guild. You may want to start with some rats in a cave just north of Maelbrim, the sewers below Miruvhor or even the Drkshtyre Wood just south of Val Miran. You've already got a few maps on hand at least. You should be able to find those places fairly easily. Seek out 'HELP TOUR' as well as they can provide some other basic advice going forward. Good luck out there.
