Limiting amount of characters.

As it stands now, one can create as many characters as you want. Of course, as these characters grow in power the player will want to gather plenty of rare items to make themselves more powerful. The problem with this, in my opinion, is that a player with plenty of time and dedication can create many characters(that may not even be very active) and hog all the good equipment to themselves. I myself have had several high end characters hording equipment, though I've deleted most of them by now.

I propose that we change this, so that good items won't only be in the hands of the hardcore players. How about we create an account system? Every player will register an account name, password, and e-mail. Once he has an account he can create up to, say, three characters(or whatever amount you guys might agree upon). The character in the first slot would be called the Main Character, which is exactly how characters are handled now. The other two would be called Secondary Characters. Perhaps they are not allowed to have any rares, or perhaps just a few rares.

Not only will this open up more rares for those who are not in the elite few, it may also change FL's character turn over rate, maybe resulting in less trash characters...

Just my thoughts, feel free to add yours or some other suggestions...

I agree with the feelings regarding equip hoarding and trash characters, but I think something that complicated to start up a character will be a huge, huge turnoff to newbies visiting the MUD.

It's a good idea, but I believe it's been brought up and shot down before.

Even if we did, anyone feeling restrained by the system would simply make extra e-mail accounts for main characters. The system would work if we actually had to pay for accounts, heh, not that I would go that far.

Though a good idea, with secondary characters having more of a rare limit imposed upon them it might mean people don't want to play secondary characters because of that. Plus random_clown's point too.

Dey

And, god forbid anyone believe this or not, rares depend on how many characters there are. So, if I had four characters, all of them with a minor globe, more would show up. The point right now however is that many characters that are 3+ months old have not been purged, and are now holding rares they shouldn't, and I believe it was said in another thread that it was being worked on.

I say no to this idea. Flat out.

I think most of the problem is, if a character gets purged, he/she doesn't lose the equipment until he/she logs on? Or am I wrong? If I am right, is there anyway you can make a system to log the characters on(an IMM) and purge them of the items? Because I have some characters I get full rares and I don't play for a month, then I'll log on, get purged, then go and get another suit and not log on for another month. Bad habbit...

Well, they could make other e-mail accounts but the IMMs have access to all IP addresses which acces FL, right? So just monitor the IP addresses and make sure the player base knows that multi-accounting is illegal.

Or just have a certain amount of chars per ip, that would be the best bet if possible. But then, how many chars you got out there you forgot about? That are fully decked in rare? If I have a char thats got good rares I'm playing him, unless they are naked and thats how they were forgot about.

unless they are naked and thats how they were forgot about.

I think we found our problem player

Problem with monitoring IP's is, there are quite a few cases in the community where more than one player plays off the same IP. {Brothers, Boyfriend/Girlfriend, ect}

Or people that play off of more than one IP (home, work, school, friend's, etc)

I had 12+ characters with half of them 1year + pinacles, and guess how many had rares ? Zero.

Multiple characters do not hog rares, because you need to actualy play them to hoard the rares, else you cannot hold them. That is why i am know most of the best non rare equipment. With mithrill being the best half of it. I still have not found non rare equipment that can beat mithrill armor, the goodies set not that tainted things that i would never use.

Guess how many went to the land of lost data in this new purge -> 10

Or have AOL-type dynamic IPs.

Untrue. As stated by Zavero, unless the characters log on, their equipment stays with them and stays OUT of circulation. At least that is to my understanding.

At least until we go in and manually purge them.

Ew, won't that take... forever? There has got to be a ridiculous number of pfiles, plus you'll have to go through each one and look to see if a rare weapon is even saved to their file. THEN, if you just open in a text editor and remove it.. the smallest little slip-up will not let the mud boot.

I forsee manually removing objs from pfiles as... impossible.

Unless you are talking of a way which I don't know of. Then I obviously have no clue.

and besides, Ive been known to actively play anywhere from 2-5 characters, all with rares.

I am totally for this idea. Making it IP specific, with say, a 5 or 6 character limit. This allows for a person to have a good share of characters to play and even if two people share a connection, they could have 2 or 3 characters a piece.

Yes, IP masking and dynamic IPs would play a weird role in this, but its alot better than doing it off an email address.

I agree with the need, though from a skewed viewpoint as the only way I get a lot of my really good rares is by killing other people for them. Hence, my most active current character is the one with all the rares. However, I really don't like the account idea. Like was said, I believe it would be a big, big turn off for new players. I know that back in the day, it was for me. Until I settled down here...

I think we should do a pwipe. It would be fun to see who recreates what, and who goes for something new.
