Skill/Spell Mastery

I suggest that it would be in the best interest of new players if we develop a sticky thread to accurately divulge factual information regarding the advantages of skill and spell mastery. The thread (or link to a wiki page) could lay out the spells or skills in a spreadsheet manner allowing new players to see why they should master some things. Since I do not know ALL of the advantages of mastering ALL of the skills I ask those other helpful veterans to please join me in helping any new players we may happen to acquire. Transparency will create an inviting and friendly atmosphere as opposed to the secret mongering elitist attitude that creates grief and suspicion in new players. Anyone with access to the Wiki, please help the new and learning as they arrive. Those of you with the secrets, share them here so they can be collected for posterity. And finally Staff, watch this thread close to insure we do not share proprietary information. Thank you all.

shouldn't the answer though be ..

master everything.

it is always better.

and leave added effects to be discovered in game?

yes, master everything, I can't think of very many skills that you dont want to master aside from pick lock or create food, stuff like that.

yes, make sure you master shocking grasp, burning hands, cause light, cause serious and lighting bolt, scout.. and cure light if you have cure critical.. def going to need those in the higher ranks..hmm, I feel like I'm missing some very important ones too. Oh ya, master create water, especially if you have create spring.

Let's not be rude, @sarcon

Not every skill or spell needs to be mastered. Personally I support removing spells that have stronger late game alternatives. Perhaps we can instead, though, discuss making such skills universal, and reach power ups as you rank. Instead of, say, cause light/critical/harm, you get "harm" which gets steadily more damage as you rank, and in turn make it a slight bit harder to master.

Great idea. I was obviously being extremely sarcastic just to point out that you don't need to Master everything.

Ideally you want to Master anything of true value to your playstyle. Use it, test it and determine its worth. If you get value out of it master it. However, I would be more concerned with wasting practices for things you won't use regularly.

Unfortunately you'll only get that answer after playing that class multiple times.

I always master create food.  Two reasons: you'll eventually use it enough to master it anyways, and you don't want to fail and have to try again in the middle of a fight.  If you're a create food class, chances are you don't carry much if any food on you - the spell has at least two rounds of lag and uses more mana than many other spells, making it something you don't want to have go wrong when you cast it.

There is hard info lacking for many aspects of the game. Lately the gates of info are somewhat opening, yet we are still extremely behind any normal game.

We've had people who've been playing this game for straight 16 years and there is still so much info unknown. This game is honestly harder to master than most professions you can make a living of, and that's mostly because of the lack of real info.

Master sear, then try to push your prof over 100. Then you can cast the spell indoors. Actually I think the same goes for meteor swarm.

@sarcon  I <3 sarcasm as much as the next guy, but a couple of the things you listed are actually good to have mastered if you are a dk or paladin with the magic strike ability. Sarcasm better plz, or you will become the next Mya.

create water > create spring - since you cannot detect create water but you can locate the springs.

cure serious - - definitively master as a Paladin.

Notice as "chilling touch" is not in your list. That's a good low level spell that was made very useful with the addition of a small perk to the spell.

Daaannnnnng Sarcon. You just got Mya'd!

Edit: :D   - Can't forget the smiley face. So says Poe's law.

That's how I track those jerks who hide for hours at a time somewhere in a hidey hole that's no_where and isn't in any of the factions.

Works like a charm 100% of the time. And I always get crap for it. "HOW DID YOU KNOW!?"

Thanks mya, you gave away my trick.
