if i am a mythical one of a kind beast why do people instantly know i started as an fg.
remove restring base races
Make this request more clear - are you talking about custom races showing on the who list, or the base race showing on 'whois'?
If we do this, we'll need to make restring races as hard as, let's say, a quest race, to get. Right now they're fairly easy to achieve.
(double post)
I think making them harder is fine.
Take that Nepharak (sp) guy who's a scientist/necro thing with Mecha-zombies.
WTF?! that's totally awesome!
I wish I knew that could be done, because a char of mine a couple years ago really needed some light re-skinning to make their story plausible. Subsequently, I got a lot of crap about not actually being the type of creature I claimed it was but was instead just the base class.
Made me so frustrated. Even though the IMMS had given me a re-string, the players wouldn't acknowledge it because of the 'hard-coded' aspects that showed my class as otherwise.
Removing the base race helps with this. Only problem, is that I have no idea if a "Troll" is vuln to fire, magic, ice, etc. so that has a definite pk advantage for the re-string. But like you said, just make it harder to obtain (like a q-class and I think that would help.)
+1 from me.
Im saying taking the base race out of whois and who to make it a truly unique race. Sure they have the vulns and stats of a base race. But you should not know a Tordenaught is vuln to magic, you should learn by expirementing.
Im completely fine with making restrings a bit harder to achieve, given the new raising of the level cap for descs to 30, it allows restrings to have that same ceiling meaning any race/class combo has viable training to do at 30 anyway.

I'm both for this and against.
Even with the big Qraces, we've an idea to their vulns, so we should have an idea to the player restrings.
And yet, it shouldn't be quite the easy access with WHOIS and WHO . Perhaps the only place it be is as a minor mention in BIO ?
Unless that is, they're accepted on par with imm approved Qraces.
I like the idea, but Magick brings out a very valid point.
Perhaps a line could be added to a character's bio "The race [whatever] shares similarities with Fire Giants."
Also, this would help in another direction - it would fully spell the restring race in the brackets, not just a short spelling. I still have no idea what most people's restrings are, cause the short for is simply not enough.
Restrings already are fully spelled out in "bio "

That's good, haven't noticed it.
What about the original suggestion though?
Against, simply because it then provides a PK advantage to being restrung over not being restrung, as everyone now has to guess your race while the same is not required for the non-restrung. I think a better way to solve the kind of issue that p body mentions is an idea I had a while ago - allow people to give themselves their restring during character creation, though an app for it would still be required when you ask for a dcheck to keep it. This way, nobody would ever see my goblin as a halfling or whatever, and it's no more abusable than being able to select our own names.
Not letting you see a restring's original race would end up making a restring a pk tool instead of an rp tool. I am against it. I like Pali's idea. Maybe the more common restrings could be an option when selecting the race itself? Ie, you could be a fire giant, fire elemental, etc, but still have the same racial stats as the FG. Then, if you wanted a restring that wasn't on the list, you could do a special app for it. This would give fl a dozen new races without actually having to code a dozen new races (maybe down the road, those pre-approved restrings could become a race in and of itself).

Yes. But the suggestion was that that is the only place you could see it.
Pali's suggestion has merit, too. Also like it better than mine.
