Gear is awesome and it IS forsaken lands therefore the RP is consistent with the forsaken lands.
It may not be consistent with a Tolkien-esque version of fantasy, but it is uniquely part of our mythos and is a welcome branch from elves, dwarves, and halfling cookie cutters.

Say that again... I will get the fantasy characters' union in here. We will stop cutting cookies and start cutting fools!
Gear is a SICK area. It departs slightly the standard RP of the world, but not completely. The Sanctuary of Contraptions is a fairly scientifically advanced concept and Brambus obviously has some level of mechanical know-how. It would make sense the most advanced techmaturgical (what machine meets magic) location would be head and shoulders above what a standard machinist like Brambus, even being the most advanced gnome I am aware of, could muster. I like Gear, don't change a thing... and someone teach it to me.
For what it's worth, i'm a big fan of gear myself. I think it's an interesting expansion in to the evolution of technology. I'm not saying we need AK's, but the soulless metal adds an interesting backdrop to a fun story that builds us past the stock feeling many people rail against. The only thing that seems out of place is the spaceman, and all that needs really is a name change to make it ok. We're one planet in a multiverse, after all, why shouldn't the very rare occurance of an alien visitor happen. In fact, a fair number of gods fit the description of 'alien' myself and all demons included.
I'm working on an area myself that I hope will hold up to the standards of the playerbase. When it's ready, i hope you all can let me know if its something you can agree with, to help us work towards better building methods.
Because of me? You can piss off.
Take it easy, it wasn't an attack or anything. I apologize if it came across that way.
I for one have only done Avalon twice, so I do not have an intimate knowledge of its intricacies, or paid close attention to all the descriptions and what not. However, I am very familiar with gear, and as Volg mentioned, it is one of my favorite areas as well. I feel it fits in with the motif as it is, if it were a standard area to go to, then I might have an objection.
As for Emp's suggestion, I do like it. Although, I personally think we should work on some more middle level quest areas that are like Avalon in that you can go through them at lower levels or higher. Instead of people spending their time just continually running through the same zone to kill the same mobs, give them a quest line to complete with mobs and puzzles that gives out lots of xp and some cool gear to boot.
Putting in true alternatives to high end eq is nothing new and we have been doing it for a while now. E.g. look at the changes to the 4 plagues eq. Other areas, as e.g. Avalon are on the to do list and will get more viable eq as well eventually.
