Backpacks and other things that go thump in the night...

I didn't want to derail the vet ranting thread any farther, so I decided to post this here... Regarding the heart hoarding and consumable stocking, there is one suggestion that I hesitate to make, because most of my characters are relatively low strength, but the root of a lot of these issues is the backpack... You know, that one that lets you carry a couple hundred items without weighing more than 10 pounds... It used to be that the portable hole was one hugely popular item, and now it is ALWAYS in... Just my two cents, but the proliferation of the <100% containers have made things way too convenient and taken the str/dex component out of the equation when it comes to carrying things... High str characters(giants/dwarves) need to carry a lot of consumables in sacks, and the high dex races can carry them outside their sack, but not as many... These things were all a part of game balance, and with the introduction of the backpack, people are carrying limitless amounts of food/drink and all types of consumables around...

Getting rid of, or modifying these items would go a long way to solve some of the consumable issues without having to make a huge change to their availability, which I am ambiguous to as far as being a plus or minus... It may also make a person a little more picky about what they take from that fresh corpse lying in front of them as well...

Just a thought... Discuss/refute at will...

The backpack has always been there, as far as I can remember. Personally I can't really recall the portable hole being considered really important at any point.

I do, however, agree that it's a bit ridiculous how much stuff people carry around with them. Consumable farming has reached ridiculous levels.

I killed an ogre warrior awhile back with Valkynsra when he was active. He had 112 hearts in his backpack.

Wow, is all I can say.

It really annoys me when I see goods carrying around nymph hearts, also... RP, anybody?

I agree. I don't know how that's not anti-good/anti-neutral or something, but it should be. And I don't think it should cure critical -- maybe cure light or something. ^.^

****in A dude, you get poster of the year (or history of time since said backpack went into play) for this thread!

Speaking of which, making it so pills make you full like food would definitely fix these kinds of issues!

I can assure you Backpacks were not always apart of FL, and items like the portable hole did matter way back when.

Horse ****, lower the survivability of CC's before you take away a melee's consumables.

And while the "backpack" courtesy of the elves has not always been there, the "leather backpack" of the mage tower, original stock area the High Tower of Sorcery was carried over from AR, has always been on FL. And it carries nearly the same properties.

If memory serves, which at my age it usually doesn't, and I have lost my ident files, the TOS one is 40 or 60, not 10... That is a huge difference...

You are correct, it wasn't until the elf city came into being in it's second incarnation that those backpacks came into being... I believe it was after the first pwipe between the 1st and 2nd age... But again, I am not certain, I just know they weren't here originally...

It isn't just the backpacks, but in combination with the quantity of consumables one can farm that makes for the situation as it is currently...

The fact that C/C's can also use these items, allowing the recasting of spells in combat not meant to be done in combat, is as much of a boon to them as any other class...

To be honest, coming back a while ago, I was surprised at the power of a lot of the items in such a convenient place as the Hamlet... Beats the bread one could get there at one time, that is for sure... Industrious little halfling bastards!!!

Industrious little halfling bastards!!!

luckily they are enslaved.

Now just you shut your damn mouth.
