F0xx is on the right track here. Rare eq=near same stats as now (void leggings =-15 aff), mundane=lower degrees of those stats (void =-10 aff), unique has a random flag (void=~-15 aff AND -15 AC)

That's a pretty damn good idea, and the infrastructure is there (or, was, at least).
The Amedus stuff from Gear used to work together depending on which pieces you had.
