Jewelers take the rough stones that come out of gem deposits and cut them
into gems. A stone comes out chipped, cut, or flawless.

Cutting a stone is not the end of the work, because a gem does nothing at all
until it has been imbued, and you only get one attempt at imbuing each one.

Jewelers also cut the sockets that gems sit in, and grind stones down into
gem dust. Enchanters need the dust, and you can imbue with it too.

From rank 95, you can force a ring's setting. A forced ring holds more
than its metal should, but a miss cracks the stone.
