Ignore Command

REMOVE IT. PLEASE.

This is the SECOND time today someone ignored me because they couldn't RP up to my standards, or couldn't figure out what to say back to me, and AFTER ignoring me, they start talking crap to me.

The only use I see with it, is escaping RP. Those who spam others will get caught, EVENTUALLY, but even then, it would be just better if the game caught the spammer sending multiple messages to one person and silencing them, or kicking them off.

OR BETTER YET, let's just make it so if you ignore someone, you can't talk to them. If you're ignoring someone, you really shouldn't have any motivation to say anything back, because you're keeping them from RP'ing with you, and it's unfair to try and RP with them while you're ignoring them.

Thoughts, please?

I find it justifiable. The ignore command is probably originally there because of people harassing others. But how it's used now is exactly what Acer said. The ignoring of RP. If someone harasses you, take it Prayer Forum or note IMM.

I agree; block it.

Well, I've had people straight up diss my attempts at RP, in a very OOC sort of tone ... I tend to ignore those people as their comments tend to get me out of the mindset of trying to play my character ... I'll be the first to admit I'm not the best RPer out there, but when I'm making the attempt, it's seriously difficult to have to listen to someone ripping on my character while I'm trying to talk to other people.

Really ... if someone wants to ignore you ... talk to someone else, no?

Edit: Errr, but yeah, missed that last paragraph ... didn't realize you can talk to people while you're ignoring them ... yeah that seems kinda bass ackwards, mebbe that should be looked at ... doesn't seem to serve any kinda purpose.

If they're harassing you, ignore them back.

Ignore is a potent RP tool in some situations. I can perfectly understand a dark knight who wouldn't bother listening to a healer.

Both points are good ones. The ignore command helps RP but I also think it takes away from it at times. The only person who really knows is the Ignorer.

Kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place (err..another rock).

Hrm. I've ignored people and it had nothing to do with 'not appreciating' their rp. Sometimes, enough is enough when it comes to melodramatic chats. You need a way to make it stop.

Try not to take it so personally. If they don't want to spend time listening to your clever conversation, find someone who will.

Oh, and as to your last suggestion, that function already exists. It's the ignore button. You can cut them off as easily as they can you. Or, you can let them keep sending you complicated tells while you track them down and slaughter them.

The only problems I've had were with pissed off people sending tells, then ignoring, then send another tell and ignore again so I could never say a thing back. Happened a few times that I can remember.

A good fix would be to put some sort of timer on the command so that situation could be avoided. Say, if you ignore someone, you can't remove them from your ignore list for a good five minutes. Or if you stop ignoring someone, you can't ignore them again for five minutes or so.

I can accept people ignoring you when they just don't want to hear what you have to say, but not when the command is abused like that.

Once I hade someone tell me "I bet your real name is very short" about 50 times. I wish I knew about the ignore command before this. As far as RP goes, it can go both ways. I think it should be kept and the people that abuse it punished, not have it removed and have the people who use it properly punished. Now if only there was a real life ignore command...

I believe with all the debate we can all agree that we'll just have to deal with it's pros and cons. We have that with everything else in FL and RL. shrugs And it's not too big a deal as people rarely use the command: at least that I could tell.

In terms of people 'rping' with you in a manner that is nothing but petty insults and equivalent of in game flaming...yeah, I often want to just ignore them because they are just throwing idle insults about their situation. Though I don't usually and rather just tell them that I'm not even going to bother listening to it anymore since its so pointless.

Usually that quiets them down, as responding to that stuff usually just fuels the fire. Otherwise ignore is great for people just obviously annoying you just to be annoying.

Ignore...what's that?

I usually just turn off the prayer channel.

chortles Can't be bothered while playing with morts and Pax.

Love ignore. Definitely one of my favorite commands.

How about we make it so you can only ingore one person at a time?

I used ignore the other day for the first time in a while as an rp tool. Rping with another lightwalker who was insulting me. so mid conversation I started ignoring him. I hope he got the point.

I love annoying characters. What's wrong with flames Ig? As long as insults are Ig, I am totally cool and support them

What grannym4n said pretty much sums up my view. It has it's good points and likewise, it's bad points, that we have to deal with. I don't think it's a big enough problem to warrant any changing. The only problem I see is the one mentioned were people send a tell and then ignore/quiet, then turn off to tell again, so as to only speak and not let others reply. That would annoy me IMMENSELY.

You don't even have to toggle it.

Just because you are ignoring someone, they aren't automatically ignoring you.

Like

I could do

ignore deykari

tell deykari Hah, you can respond to me!

you try and reply...

reply Hah!

They are ignoring you.

Well that's ridiculous. If you're ignoring someone, you certaintly shouldn't be able to send tells to them. That would (probably) result in them ignoring you back. Just my opinion anyway.

Dey

One of my favorite rp situations involved just that scenario so don't knock it. (A friend went a bit crazy and started ranting at me. Was painfully cool.)

Like has been said a few times now, if they want to talk and aren't willing to listen, it takes you two seconds to type in ignore [player] and move on.

is tempted to roll a character based on the premise of ignoring everyone...

I think that if you're ignoring someone, you shouldn't be able to speak to them either.
